TV and Toddlers
A recent study discussed in the April edition of Pediatrics links toddler television viewing to hyperactivity. According to the Christian Science Monitor, the study “suggests that the pace of today’s programs, including quick action, rapid scene changes, and high noise levels, might overstimulate and permanently ‘rewire’ the developing brain” (April 9). Thus, researchers encouraged parents to prevent children under the age of 2 from watching television—period. Thereafter, tv viewing should be limited.
It remains to be seen whether or not the news will come as a wake-up call for parents. In America, about one fourth of children under age 2 have televisions in their bedrooms.
