Der Spiegel: ‘Britain Must Choose Now if It Will Stay in Europe’

“For years Britain has blackmailed and made a fool out of the EU. The United Kingdom must finally make a choice: It can play by the rules or it can leave the European Union.” So read the quip to a Der Spiegel editorial published online on June 3.

Coming one week after a massive shift right in the European elections, the German news agency noted that Europe finds itself at an “historical turning point” in regard to its own democratic values and whether or not the United Kingdom should be a part of it.

The Speigeleditorial is in response to comments made earlier by British Prime Minister David Cameron that he would no longer be able to guarantee Britain’s participation in the EU if Luxembourg’s former prime minister, Jean-Claude Juncker, became the European Commission president. The piece lambastes Britain for disregarding the democratic process even though the EU has been thoroughly proven to be an undemocratic body from top to bottom.

However, this call for Britain to decide now whether it belongs in the EU is poignant for longtime Trumpet readers. As early as 1956, Herbert W. Armstrong forecast, “Germany will lead and dominate the coming United States of Europe. But Britain will be no part of it!” As of 2014, Germany does lead and dominate Europe, and Britain looks to be on the way out.

Speigel concluded by saying, “Britain is important to be sure. But the choice between a more democratic EU and Britain’s continued membership is clear. Europe must choose democracy.” Whether the United Kingdom chooses to leave the EU or whether it is booted out, Britain will not be part of the EU.
