May Was a Month of Extreme Weather Around the World
May was “a month of extreme weather around the world,” according to a new report by the Associated Press.
Torrential rains in Texas and Oklahoma “whiplashed the region” from drought to flooding. A heat wave in India killed more than 2,200 people. Record heat struck Alaska, and a pair of major typhoons hit the Northwest Pacific.
The report also discussed a drought that intensified in the eastern United States during May.
Jerry Meehl, an extreme-weather expert at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, said May is often an extreme weather month. However, he said this past one was “unusually intense.”
