Iran Tells World to Abide by International Law When Fighting Terrorists
The foreign ministers of Russia and Iran spoke about fighting terrorism at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization security conference in Moscow on Thursday.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said more attention should be given to tackle the issue of people going to fight with extremist groups abroad and then returning home.
In what some analysts would call hypocritical, Iranian Foreign Minister Javid Zarif called on regional players to abide by international laws. Zarif said, βIn the fight against violence, the focus must be put on international law. We are witness to efforts by regional and outside actors who disregard or selectively use international law. Horrifying examples can be seen in Syria and Yemen. We must come together to create a strong legal framework to disarm and defeat those who glorify violence.β
The United States currently lists Iran as one of three state sponsors of terrorism.
