The contemporary religious world is a mess of confusion. Numerous interpretations of the Bible obscure its true meaning. “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10). Thousands of Christian denominations teach hundreds of differing doctrines, yet they all claim to be patterned after the teachings of Jesus Christ. Does this make sense?

How does Christ speak to us today? “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:1-2). In Old Testament times, God spoke through prophets who used miracles and other methods to deliver a warning.

In the present end time, God speaks to us directly through His Son, the Head of the Church.

Ruling Spirits of the Universe

“For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh” (Colossians 2:1). The Apostle Paul dealt with Laodiceans, and there are Laodiceans in this age as well. The Colossians and the Laodiceans were both warned in the first century. One group heeded; the other didn’t. In this end time, both the Philadelphians and the Laodiceans are warned. One group heeds; the other doesn’t.

In both ages, the Laodiceans experience terrible tragedy for refusing to listen when Jesus Christ speaks.

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ” (verse 8). “Rudiments of the world” can read “ruling spirits of the universe.” These evil spirit beings have a ton of power.

“Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels …” (verse 18). “Angels” is referring to fallen angels—or demons! This spiritual catastrophe is hard to fathom: God’s own people let a puny man deceive them into worshiping Satan! Such a fall from grace is pathetic and inexcusable. It happened in the first century, and it is happening again today.

“And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God” (verse 19). Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church. He uses one man, but only as an instrument. When you reject the Head, you also reject God’s man in favor of carnal, selfish leaders.

God says you can reach a point spiritually where no one can deceive you. At one time, the Laodiceans were immune to deception (Matthew 24:24). What happened? It comes down to hearing Christ’s voice. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). Christ hasn’t given up on the Laodiceans. They still have a chance to hear God’s voice and change their lives!

A More Sure Word

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19). “Sure” means “trustworthy” or “faithful.” We can know without a doubt what the future holds. One third of the Bible is prophecy. Ninety percent of that is for today. We can’t afford to guess what these prophecies mean.

The former Worldwide Church of God and its hundreds of Laodicean splinter groups have no new revelation at all! They refuse to hear God’s voice, so God cuts them off.

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy [Spirit]” (verses 20-21). “No prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation” means that no man can know the mysteries of the Bible on his own. All the credit for our understanding goes to God.

How strong is your faith? “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Christ’s own faith will live in you if you prove all things (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Real faith involves action. Apply what you believe or else it’s valueless.

“Revelation” means to uncover, enlighten or give light. God gives His revelation to Jesus Christ, who entrusts the angels to relay it to one man over the Church, who delivers it to the people (Revelation 1:1).

Divine Protection

“And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices” (Revelation 10:1-3). “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God” (Isaiah 40:3). There is only one “voice,” or one man through whom Christ speaks. This verse refers to the late Herbert W. Armstrong, the founder of the Worldwide Church of God. “To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice” (John 10:3-4). God will protect you as long as you hear His voice. We all need protection from the terrible times just ahead.
