When U.S. President Obama backed the ousting of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in 2011 he effectively cleared the way for a radical Islamist insurgency in the Sinai region. Now the United States is planning to remove its roughly 700 troops in the region. Officials however are adamant that the move does not signal a U.S. military retreat.
