When Britain ‘Invaded’ Australia
In 1788, England “invaded” Australia. At least, that is what is now being taught to undergraduate students at Australia’s University of New South Wales (unsw).
Daily Telegraph ran an article revealing a politically correct terminology toolkit that is being foisted on history students at unsw.
The toolkit is made up of a long list of “more appropriate” and “less appropriate” terms for students to use when discussing Australian history. That is, “pre-invasion,” “invasion” and “post-invasion” history as the unsw would prefer you call it.
The university is receiving criticism for the toolkit, with many saying it defies internationally recognized law and official history that has been documented and taught in Australian classrooms for decades.
‘Invasion’ More Appropriate Than ‘Settlement’
One of the stronger statements in the toolkit instructs students that the term “settlement” should be replaced with “invasion, colonization and occupation.” It states, “Australia was not settled peacefully; it was invaded, occupied and colonized. Describing the arrival of the Europeans as a ‘settlement’ attempts to view Australian history from the shores of England rather than the shores of Australia.”
While settlement was not without violence, the new terminology used by the university pushes political correctness to the degree of offending the vast majority for the sake of the tiny minority.
The anticolonial narrative throughout the toolkit is not new to Australia. Portrayals of British colonists and their descendants as cruel and sinister have been made before, usually following strong campaigns from the left and aboriginal-rights activists. Lobbying usually revolves around land reclamation and reparations for the “stolen generation.”
A Sensitive Nation
In 2008, then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd followed through with his preelection promise and offered an official apology to what is known as the “stolen generation.” Aboriginal children were allegedly mistreated when they were handed over to foster parents in an initiative that many inaccurately consider to be an effort to “keep white Australians pure.” Although a terrible tragedy, it was hijacked by those seeking further government concessions.
The issue has been so politicized, so spoiled by do-gooders and demonizers on both sides, and so removed from reality that the whole issue is almost unrecognizable today. And it is all based on a fact-scarce story. As author and commentator Andrew Bolt wrote for the Herald Sun, “[N]o one has yet named even 10 of these 100,000 children we are told were stolen.”
The stolen generation is just one example of the ploys intellectuals and political elites have used to hijack Australian history in the name of political correctness.
The shaming of Australia’s national history has led to the government, legislative and educational bodies making more radical left-wing reforms to avoid offending more aboriginals. As a result, the left is now seeking to demonize Australia’s white history in an attempt to appease the minority. This endangers not only Australia’s proud history, but also its future—which should concern everyone, black or white.
Changing History
There is little doubt that the prosperity of Australia, its demographics and societal makeup are based in large part on British influence. Yet the inspiring history of the British Commonwealth and its monarchs is being rewritten under the guise of political correctness.
The unsw toolkit deems the terms “native” and “primitive” as inappropriate. It prefers using “complex and diverse societies.” This is, of course, nonsense. When Captain Cook sailed up the coast, he met people who wore little more than a loincloth, often hunted using crude strip-and-burn techniques and had no fundamental understanding of education nor, apparently, any forward progress for thousands of years. That may offend some, but it is the truth.
Real advancements only came when Australia was colonized. In January 1788, Capt. Arthur Phillip arrived with the 1st Fleet, carrying over 1,000 military men and convicts. In the early 1800s, schools started popping up in New South Wales, and education quickly spread.
In 228 years, Australia has been taken from the Stone Age to what you see today. This has been accomplished in no small part by the efforts of Captain Cook aboard the Endeavor, as well as the labor of the convicts and the early settlers who dared travel to the far side of the world to make a fresh start in a foreign and near-inhospitable land.
As an Australian myself, this isn’t shameful history. It is one to take an overall pride in. Though the actions of some settlers were wrong, the overall goals and objectives of the British were not.
Australia’s ties to the Commonwealth—to the royal family—defines the nation. The Union Jack holds pride of place in the Australian flag for a reason.
Nobody refutes the fact that aboriginals lived in Australia long before the British arrived, but neither can the fact be denied that Australia’s rise from obscurity came with British colonization.
There shouldn’t be shame in the fact that a considerable amount of Australia’s history is founded “on the shores of England rather than the shores of Australia.” Again, the Australia of today is home to whites, blacks and a whole host of ethnicities. All have histories that to one degree or another now influence Australia as a whole. But nobody can deny the fact that Australia’s British heritage shaped the nation more than anything.
This exciting history shouldn’t be revised through the politically correct nonsense coming out of unsw.
Herein lies the danger that this revisionist program has for Australians today: When we lose sight of our ties to the British Empire and the royal family, we lose sight of our future.
Australia and the Throne of David
The Trumpet has often drawn attention to the royal throne in Britain and the promises and prophecies concerning it. As descendants of the Anglo-Saxons and members of Her Majesty’s Commonwealth, these promises extend to Australia as well.
The amazing part is, the Bible is literally full of such references. Notice this exciting truth as explained by Herbert W. Armstrong in his book The United States and Britain in Prophecy:
Here is the fact as little realized as any in the Bible! Almighty God made an absolutely binding—just how binding we shall see!—covenant with David, unconditionally guaranteeing that there should never be a single generation from that time forward when there would not be a descendant of David, in unbroken dynasty sitting on David’s throne, ruling over children of Israel! It was the promise of a continuous, unbroken dynasty— all generations forever—that was guaranteed.
Read that incredible promise in 2 Samuel 7:4-16. In the ensuing chapters of his book, Mr. Armstrong goes on to detail the biblical truths—combined with historical facts—that prove King David’s throne eventually migrated to England. Without adequate space in this article to cover such detail, we encourage you to request and read The United States and Britain in Prophecy (all of our literature is free, without follow-up or obligation).
Mr. Armstrong explains Australia’s glorious biblical ties to the British—and more importantly, its royal heritage and future:
Soon Britain’s empire spread around the world, until the sun never set upon her possessions. Canada, Australia, South Africa were given dominion status—made free and independent nations, ruling themselves independent of England—a company, or commonwealth, of nations joined together, not by legal government, but solely by the throne of David!
That is what revisionist history seeks to sever: The incredible link in a chain that ties back to King David and God’s promise of an eternal throne.
In a world filled with appalling evils, we need this vision. Few promises can provide that hope in a way as awesome and inspiring as the key of David vision. Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry explains this vision as “the royal gospel viewed through the eyes of the Father, and the Husband, and the headquarters Bride—the highest level of God’s government through all eternity.” It is a future world-ruling Empire led by Christ Himself, ruling from that selfsame throne we see in England today!
Australia—black and white—can be a part of that eternal Kingdom.
