This Week: Five Events You Need to Know (October 22)

The state of American morality, a nuclear-armed Iran, another Maoist era in China, and more

Here are five of the most important news stories this week, as well as relevant links to the full articles and videos here on theTrumpet.com.

What the Harvey Weinstein Scandal Teaches Us About America

One of entertainment’s most powerful men, Harvey Weinstein, stands exposed as a serial womanizer and a brazen pervert, a fitting symbol of a corrupt industry. In not-unrelated news, a few weeks ago pornographer Hugh Hefner died, and was widely eulogized as a cultural revolutionary, a valiant conqueror of sexual repression.

These regrettable headlines reveal the sick state of American morality. They link human conduct to the spate of curses besieging America.

A Nuclear-Armed Iran Is Coming

United States President Donald Trump announced on October 13 that he will not certify Iran’s compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. It was his toughest act yet against the Iran nuclear deal. But it is far from what he promised along the campaign trail. It is a compromise that “punts the problem over to Congress,” as the American Enterprise Institute’s Danielle Pletka wrote on October 6. And it might actually speed up Iran’s dash for nuclear weapons.

Do Not Ignore the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen

Yemen is the “largest humanitarian crisis in the world,” says United Nations official Mark Lowcock, undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator. Yet it largely remains “a silent crisis, a silent situation and a forgotten war,” as Jamie McGoldrick, the UN’s resident humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, described it.

The mounting deaths of thousands from war, war crimes and disease are proving to be a win for radical Islamists, particularly the Iranian regime.

Xi Jinping’s Push Toward Another Maoist Era in China

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to bend leadership rules in a way that could allow him to steer China into something akin to a “new Maoist era where, unbound by rules, a strongman can stay for as long as he can hold on to power,” as columnist Gordon Chang wrote.

As Geopolitical Futures pointed out, Xi’s tightening grip on China is less about one man becoming powerful than it is about the elite of the world’s most populous nation preparing it to enter into a new turbulent era in international affairs.

New Zealand: New Prime Minister, New Direction, Why It Matters

On October 19, New Zealand announced a new prime minister: Jacinda Ardern. She is a staunch anti-Trump, anti-British Commonwealth agnostic social democrat who is set to steer New Zealand in a different, dangerous direction. Her nation will soon find itself very much alone and at the mercy of an Asia-dominated Pacific.
