UK Government Running Out of Hotel Rooms as Migrant Crisis Intensifies
So far this year, 40,000 illegal immigrants have come to the United Kingdom in small boats—compared to 28,500 in all of last year and 8,500 the year before.
To house them, the government has rented out entire hotels. Now it is looking at changing tactics, booking them into rooms in hotels that still serve the public.
On Saturday, a man attacked a migrant center in Dover with petrol bombs before killing himself. It drew attention to Britain’s illegal immigration problem.
But legal immigration in Britain is also high.
- Britain now absorbs about 1 million people every three years. That’s the equivalent of one large city arriving annually.
- Well over a quarter of all births in England and Wales are to mothers born outside the UK.
- One in five elementary schoolchildren doesn’t speak English as a first language.
- In 2,000 schools, the majority don’t speak English as a first language; and in 200 schools, 90 percent do not.
As the migration tsunami was rising, Trumpet managing editor Joel Hilliker wrote, “Instead of producing a stronger, more unified, more harmonious, peaceful and prosperous nation, the diversity cult has done untold damage. … Compulsory multiculturalism has created ghettos, fragmented British society, and empowered the most dangerous and radical of ideologues” (Feb. 18, 2008).
The UK, United States and Europe are all struggling with problems caused by immigration. All are split between factions that believe illegal immigration is a good thing and those that want it stopped. To get a biblical perspective on the debate, read our article “Nation: A Place With Borders.”
