Trudeau Is Coming for Canadians’ Guns
After a deranged gunman opened fire in Nova Scotia in 2020, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau banned 1,500 models of “military-grade” firearms and pledged to buy them back from owners. Now Canada’s Liberal government is preparing to launch the first phase of its mandatory buyback program, but several provinces and territories say they will not help.
- On December 1, Saskatchewan’s provincial government introduced the Saskatchewan Firearms Act, which is intended to “protect the rights of lawful firearms owners” from federal gun-control legislation.
- Officials in Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan and the Yukon Territory say they do not have Royal Canadian Mounted Police resources for gun confiscations.
Real agenda: Trudeau assured Canadians that government reforms of gun-control laws wouldn’t take away rifles used by hunters after professional ice hockey goaltender Carey Price spoke out against the proposed changes. Yet a brief on the gun-control bill by the National Police Federation points out that Bill C-21 “primarily targets legal firearm owners who have followed the regulations as opposed to addressing the root causes of firearm violence and violent crime.” The Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights noted that if Trudeau gets away with his plan, “Canadian firearms ownership will be dealt its most massive blow in history,” and the Institute for Legal Action noted that “Trudeau’s real agenda” is to “ban legal firearm ownership altogether.”
Rising tyranny: Many leftists in the United States want their country to implement a Trudeau-style gun grab, but they have been less successful than Canadian leftists because the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” You need not know much about history to realize why Trudeau’s gun control policies are dangerous to any free society.
José Niño at the Mises Institute noted how “[t]he Soviet Union left its mark as one of the deadliest political regimes in the history of mankind. However, it could not get away with such atrocities without having a complete monopoly on the use of force. To maintain its iron grip, the Soviet Union had to turn to the most proven form of suppression—gun confiscation. On Dec. 10, 1918, the Council of People’s Commissars mandated that Soviet citizens turn in their firearms. Failure to do so led to criminal prosecution.”
Lawless mindset: Communist Cuba, Nazi Germany, Red China, the Soviet Union and many other dictatorships throughout history have relied on “the most proven form of suppression” to control people. Now the radical left in both Canada and the U.S. are showing their tendency more and more to force their will on the public.
“Most Republicans don’t realize what they are dealing with: people who are absolutely committed to destroying the government of this land!” Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote in his 2018 article “Saving America From the Radical Left—Temporarily.” “The mindset behind the radical Democrats is exposed when you look at their handling of another issue: gun control. Every time there is a school shooting, even before any facts about the situation come out, they immediately begin pushing for gun bans. After the most recent shooting, they funded student groups and encouraged students to revolt against authorities. They don’t just want to raise the buying age or to restrict the sale of a few types of guns; they want to eliminate all guns.”
Trudeau’s gun grab gives us insight into what the Biden administration wants in the United States.
