Germany Calls for a New Defense Minister

Demands for German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht to resign are rising. In her New Year’s Eve address, after a year of scandals and the outbreak of the largest European war since World War ii, Lambrecht expressed gratitude for “many special impressions” and “encounters with interesting and great people.” The unprofessional recording and the perplexing message garnered much criticism.

The confused official conduct and grotesque appearances of the federal minister of defense are not merely embarrassing. In times of war, of all times, she is damaging the Bundeswehr and Germany’s reputation. Lambrecht should resign. …

The instinctive naiveté and complacency of the video threatens to be seen in Ukraine and among allies as documentation of Berlin’s defense policy, which is just as bad. Germany is already criticized by our partners for its hesitancy in supporting Ukraine, for its fragile alliance loyalty, for its miserable military capabilities and for its refusal to make arms commitments. The combination of pompous moral complacency and realpolitik incompetence is shaping Germany’s image in a visibly dangerous way. This video therefore underpins the worst prejudices about Germany’s decline.

Spiegel Online asked in its January 2 morning briefing, “How many embarrassments, mistakes and omissions can a member of the traffic-light government allow himself before [Chancellor] Olaf Scholz loses patience?”

  • In her first interview after taking office, Lambrecht said she did not know the ranks of the Bundeswehr. Five months later, she confessed the same.
  • As Russia surrounded Ukraine, Lambrecht proudly announced the delivery of 5,000 helmets.
  • A photo of her son in a Bundeswehr helicopter garnered much criticism. A later court order forced her to admit that she was the one behind the camera.
  • Media Pioneer revealed Lambrecht refused to allow critical journalists to travel with her.
  • She has no success to claim.

There is no sign of rapid reforms, smart investments or necessary modernization in the Bundeswehr—despite €100 billion in special funds.

An awakening military power: The name German means “war man,” pointing to the German people’s long history of warfare. Germany used to produce fierce military leaders. With each failed politician today, Germany’s desire to return to past greatness is being stoked. But its past military greatness often led to war. This has been the German people’s struggle throughout the centuries.

As Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry explains in Habakkuk, the resurrected Holy Roman Empire led by Germany is in the Bible referred to as a “bitter and hasty nation” and its armed forces as “evening wolves” (Habakkuk 1:6-8). That’s why the Trumpet expects Germany’s current apparent incompetence to experience a dramatic turnaround.
