Argentina’s Right-wing Candidate Wins Primary

Right-wing populist Javier Milei unexpectedly won Argentina’s presidential primaries on Sunday, making him the leading candidate for October’s elections.

The former television personality gained popularity among a population angry with high inflation and poverty. Milei wants to change the country’s currency from the peso to the United States dollar and close the nation’s central bank. He is pro-life, doesn’t believe climate change is real, and wants to make it easier for citizens to bear arms.

Milei has served only one term as a congressional representative. Voting for an outsider shows how Argentines are fed up with the current government and want extreme change.

European connection: For much of its history, Latin America has sat in Europe’s back pocket. The two regions are culturally intertwined: in religion, languages and ancestors. Europe also has a strong military presence in Latin America.

Recently, many nations in Europe have been swinging right and looking to outsider candidates, fueled by discontent with current governments. Latin America is doing the same.

In 1962, the Trumpet’s predecessor magazine, the Plain Truth, wrote, “The United States is going to be left out in the cold as two gigantic trade blocs, Europe and Latin America, mesh together and begin calling the shots in world commerce.”

If both Europe and Latin America change politics, it will be much easier for them to work together. The rise of a strong right-wing leader in Argentina points to this strengthening partnership with Europe.
