A New Alliance for a European Main Battle Tank

Germany is entering an alliance with partners from Italy, Spain and Sweden to develop a successor to its Leopard 2 battle tank, Handesblatt reported on September 7. German companies Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall will be the leading firms involved with the project.

The battle for the battle tank: In 2017, Germany and France agreed on a main battle tank project called the Main Ground Combat System. Officially, Germany continues to pursue this cooperation.

But the project has faced delays due to political and industrial disputes that often center around France’s fear of losing out in the cooperation. The new project appears to pressure France to enter a less profitable deal with Germany or lose out completely.

Germany’s aggressive push to bring about a European battle tank indicates that this prophecy is nearing its fulfillment. While many European nations are still reluctant to give power over to Germany, more crises will soon unite Europe in an unprecedented way.
