Germany to Deploy Brigade of 5,000 Troops to Lithuania
A Bundeswehr brigade of 5,000 men will be deployed to nato ally Lithuania, according to a deal signed by German and Lithuanian defense ministers Boris Pistorius and Arvydas Anušauskas on December 18. The deployment will mark the first time Germany permanently stations troops outside its borders since World War ii.
- Members of the brigade will begin to deploy in 2025, reaching full battle readiness in 2027, Anušauskas said.
- The brigade will consist of five battalions, including tank and artillery battalions.
- Some German soldiers will live in the largest cities of the country, Vilnius and Kaunas.
Defense against Russia: Lithuania has repeatedly asked Germany to send defensive troops to the country since Russia began its war on Ukraine. Lithuania is in close proximity to Russia and was part of the Soviet Union until 1990. The presence of a German brigade in Lithuania is expected to strengthen the Baltic region’s security against potential Russian aggression.
This is a landmark project. A signal to those who threaten peace and security in Europe … the Germans have understood the realities of the new security policy. We will defend nato territory and provide effective deterrence.
—Boris Pistorius
