The Rehabilitation of Assad

The Arab League, Turkey and Europe are reuniting with Syria.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has committed some of the worst crimes against any people in modern history. Following the brutal oppression and killing of thousands of Syrians in 2011 and the ensuing civil war, many countries cut diplomatic relations with Assad. But over the last year, the Assad regime is gradually being rehabilitated in the Arab world. We now see signs that the European Union and Turkey are about to follow suit.

After a 12-year suspension, Assad was allowed to attend the Arab League Summit in Saudi Arabia last year. His reacceptance by the group of almost two dozen Arab countries had nothing to do with morals but was strategic—a strategy largely frowned on by the West. Think thank Atlantic Council wrote: “The Arab League Thinks Readmitting Syria Will Push Out Iran. They’re Wrong.”

But are they? Geopolitical Futures wrote in May: “Arab states, and particularly Arab Gulf states, also want to see Iran leave Syria. They have even made demands to that end, and given that they will be the ones to finance Syria’s reconstruction, it’s not a demand Assad can ignore.”

Assad is increasingly looking to rebuild Syria. For this he needs new allies.

A big question is whether the EU would be willing to help with Syria’s reconstruction if Assad remains in power. This week we have seen some major indications that the answer is yes.

On July 22, eight European member states called on Brussels to change its strategy for Syria. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg explained:

After 13 years of war, we have to admit that our Syria policy has not aged well. Bitter as it is, with the help of Iran and Russia, the Assad regime remains firmly in the saddle, the Syrian opposition is fragmented or in exile altogether—the European Union cannot turn a blind eye to this reality any longer.

“Our goal is a more active, outcome-driven and operational Syria policy,” foreign ministers of Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Slovakia and Slovenia wrote in a letter, seen by Euractiv, to the EU’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell.

The goal is to enable the return of Syrian refugees from Europe and neighboring countries like Turkey.

Another sign of the imminence of restored relations is a German court ruling. The Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia ruled that asylum seekers from Syria are no longer at a general risk of civil war and thus are no longer entitled to subsidiary protection. Since 2015, Germany has taken in over a million Syrian refugees—now it appears that the return for some draws near.

Turkey, which also houses millions of Syrian refugees, is also seeking to revive relations with Syria. At the beginning of July, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, “We want to restore Turkey-Syria relations to the same level as in the past.”

These are extraordinary developments that foretell a rapid shift in alliance in the Middle East. In “Iran Is Losing Syria to Germany,” Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote:

Many Arab nations oppose Iran, but Syria has been an ally. Through it, Iran gained critical access to the Mediterranean Sea and a base to supply its terrorist proxies and to attack Israel. For years Syria has played a crucial role in Iran’s dominant presence in the Middle East.

But Bible prophecy indicates that through Syria, Germany is about to get control of the Middle East instead!

Referencing the Psalm 83 prophecy, I wrote this in our September 2012 Trumpet: “Right now, Bashar Assad’s Syria is closely allied with Iran—but this prophecy shows that these two nations are about to split. This will have a domino effect on other nations. These events will really shake this world and dramatically alter the course of history!” I also noted that this momentous split between Syria and Iran would be aided by Germany.

Based on that same prophecy, I recorded a Key of David program this past May titled “Iran Is Losing Syria to Germany.” At the time, I saw nothing indicating that this shift was imminent; in fact, I hadn’t seen much in the news about Syria at all.

But now we are seeing more and more indications of Iran losing grip over Syria and the formation of a new alliance including Syria, other Arab nations, Turkey and Germany. This alliance is prophesied in Psalm 83.

Mr. Flurry devoted a major feature in the Trumpet’s August issue to Syria, and these recent events prove his forecast and these end-time prophecies to be spot on. What’s happening in the Middle East at this moment goes far beyond mere regional developments; the Bible reveals that they will soon impact the entire world!

How and, more importantly, why is explained in Mr. Flurry’s article “Iran Is Losing Syria to Germany.”
