Ukrainians Evacuate Pokrovsk as Russian Forces Advance

Ukrainian citizens fled the city of Pokrovsk in the nation’s east on August 23, as Russian forces advanced toward this key logistical hub.

• Pokrovsk was long viewed as far enough from the front lines to be a comparatively safe city for Ukrainian civilians.
• In recent weeks, Russians have concentrated their firepower on capturing it.
• They have launched as many as 46 attacks in a single day on Ukraine’s defense positions as they move incrementally closer.
• Russian forces are now only 8 miles from the city center.
• Ukrainian officials issued a mandatory evacuation for families with children on August 19 in hopes of keeping them from being added to the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian children Russia has already kidnapped during the war.
