Russia Retakes Part of Kursk, Advances Toward Pokrovsk

Russian military forces have recaptured part of the Kursk region that Ukraine invaded last month, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday. The news comes as Russian forces in Ukraine’s eastern region continue to advance closer to the key city of Pokrovsk.

Reversing a humiliation: On August 6, Ukraine brought the war to Russia in an unprecedented way by invading the Kursk region. The surprise move marked the first time Russia had been invaded by a foreign military since World War ii.

On September 10, Russia’s 155th Naval Infantry Brigade, 106th Airborne Division and the 7th Air Assault Division’s 56th Air Assault Regiment started attacking Ukrainian positions in Kursk.

The Russian Defense Ministry says its forces have now retaken 10 villages.

Key logistics hub: At the same time, Russian forces have continued to advance toward Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine.

For more than two years, Pokrovsk was viewed as far enough from the war’s front lines to be comparatively safe for Ukrainian civilians. It is among Ukraine’s primary defensive strongholds in the Donetsk region and a vital logistics hub. In recent weeks, Russia has concentrated its firepower on capturing it.

On September 11, Russian forces captured the village of Lysivka, according to geolocation footage. This means they are only some 3 miles away from Pokrovsk.

Why it matters: Reclaiming Kursk would give Putin a major PR victory and end the morale boost the Ukrainians received from its capture.

More important to the overall war is Pokrovsk, a hub for roads and rail lines, including several that the Ukrainian military depends on for resupply of weaponry and units. If the Ukrainians lose control of the area, it would have implications far beyond Pokrovsk and could position Russian forces for faster advancements further east.

Putin’s role prophesied: Bible prophecy shows that Russian President Vladimir Putin is fiercely determined to expand his power and strengthen Russia. Whatever the outcome of the current conflict, Putin will eventually lead a vast Asian army that will fight much larger wars.
