New York City Mayor Eric Adams Indicted
New York City Mayor Eric Adams was indicted by federal prosecutors on Wednesday. He is the city’s first mayor to be charged with criminal offenses while in office.
Indictment: The indictment is believed to be connected to allegations that the Turkish government illegally gave money to Adams’s 2021 mayoral campaign in exchange for approval of a Turkish consulate in Manhattan.
The lead investigator, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams, will publicize the specific charges later today.
Inner circle: There are four ongoing corruption investigations into Adams and his top staffers, which have led to raids on their homes and even some resignations.
- Federal agents raided the home of Adams’s chief campaign fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, in November 2023.
- New York City Police commissioner Edward Caban resigned after federal investigators raided his home two weeks ago.
- Two days later, Adams’s chief counsel, Lisa Zornberg, resigned because of federal probes.
- Last week, two New York City Fire Department chiefs were arrested for bribery, corruption and false statement offenses.
Resignation? Despite multiple calls to resign, Adams has said he will fight the charges, claiming they are “entirely false, based on lies.”
I always knew that If I stood my ground for New Yorkers that I would be a target—and a target I became. If I am charged, I am innocent, and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit.
—Eric Adams
