Germany Enraged Over Iran’s Execution of German Citizen
Iranian authorities executed German-Iranian citizen Jamshid Sharmahd on Monday morning after sentencing him to death last year for “corruption on Earth.” The act elicited strong condemnation across Europe, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling it a “scandal.”
Allegations: Sharmahd, 69, was a journalist and software engineer, who was targeted by Tehran for his association with Tondar, an Iranian opposition group. In July 2020, Sharmahd was abducted while traveling through the United Arab Emirates.
The Iranian regime accused him of planning an attack on a mosque in 2008 that killed 14 people and wounded over 200 others. Tehran also alleged that Sharmahd had disclosed information regarding the locations of Iranian missile sites.
Sharmahd’s family and the German government had worked for years disputing the accusations of terrorism. His daughter told cbs that he had been forced to confess to crimes he had not committed.
In response to the death sentence in 2023, Germany expelled two Iranian diplomats.
Serious consequences: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock made several statements on Monday expressing her condolences to Sharmahd’s family and strongly denouncing his execution. She promised “serious consequences” and said Germany “reserved the right to take further measures.”
Miguel Berger, German ambassador to the United Kingdom, said, “This heinous crime will have severe consequences for Iran.”
Why we watch: The Bible prophesies of a German-led European power bloc responding suddenly and violently to the provocations of radical Islam led by Iran. That is why the Trumpet closely watches Iran’s pushes against Germany.
