Catastrophic Flash Floods Sweep Through Spain

At least 51 people are dead due to devastating flash floods in southern and eastern Spain, the local government reported on Wednesday, and the number is expected to rise.

Damage: Torrential rains have caused flash floods, shutting down roads and railways and causing multiple flights in Valencia to be canceled or redirected. Over 1,000 soldiers have been deployed to deliver aid in the devastated areas.

  • In the region of Andalusia, a high-speed train with 276 passengers derailed; there were no reported injuries. Parts of Andalusia are now under the second-highest level of alert.
  • Some areas have reported nearly 20 inches of rain in just 8 hours—effectively a year’s worth of rain. Bridges have been knocked down and cars have been dragged through the streets.
  • First-hand accounts, videos and images detail the human tragedy, including reports of a woman and her infant being swept to death in the flooding.

This is the worst weather Spain has seen in years. Some have described it as biblical.

The cause: The intense rain that caused the flooding is reportedly attributed to gota fría—”cold drop”—which is when cold air moves over warm Mediterranean waters, greatly increasing the rate at which saturated air rises and leading to the rapid formation of formidable storm clouds.

Scientists warn that this extreme weather is becoming more intense due to the climate crisis, but your Bible gives a different reason.

Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote in the February 2018 Trumpet: “The idea that carbon emissions cause storms is the antithesis of what God says! [I]n a sense, humans are responsible for weather disasters. Not because of fossil fuels, but because of sin—breaking God’s commandments!”
