China and India Make Peace Along Disputed Border
China and India have almost completely withdrawn their troops and dismantled their guard posts in two areas along their disputed border in the Himalayas, Asia News Network reported on October 30.
This comes after the two countries reached a deal last week when Chinese General Secretary Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on the sidelines of the brics summit in Russia.
As part of the deal, the two countries agreed on which areas their troops would patrol and agreed to inform each other of their patrols’ movements.
Border dispute: In April 2020, China and India began moving military vehicles and thousands of troops into the border region as tensions rose in the area. India had accused China of moving troops beyond its usually patrolled area; China then accused India of changing the status quo when India built a road on its side of the border in Ladakh.
Tensions boiled over in June of that year when the two sides clashed in the worst conflict between the nuclear-armed nations in 45 years.
The Trumpet said: Regarding the clashes, we wrote:
[T]he Trumpet believes that a major conflict between China and India will not happen, and if isolated clashes do continue to erupt, they will be short-lived. [T]hough [India’s] relations with China are presently under considerable strain, the tensions will not last.
