Khamenei Orders Another Attack on Israel

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered his Supreme National Security Council to begin preparing for another attack on Israel, the New York Times reported on Thursday.

‘Too large to ignore’: Three Iranian officials said Khamenei gave the order on Monday after reviewing reports on damage caused by Israel’s retaliatory strikes. Khamenei said those strikes were “too large to ignore.”

According to the sources, Iranian military commanders are now preparing a list of Israeli targets. They added that the attack will likely be carried out “using a large number of drones and ballistic missiles.”

On Wednesday, cnn quoted “high-ranking” anonymous sources who said, “The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Zionist regime’s aggression will be definitive and painful.”

Iraqi territory: On Thursday, two Israeli intelligence sources told Axios that Iran could be preparing to launch an attack on Israel from Iraqi territory.

Mohammed Mohammadi Golpayegani, Khamenei’s chief of staff, said on Thursday that an Iranian retaliation was “certain” and that it will “make our enemy regret” its attack.

It is uncertain when Iran will launch its attack. It could be that Iran is signaling its intentions in order to enable Israel and its allies to brace to repel the attack—thus saving face without threatening a wider war at this time.
