Russia and Iran to Sign ‘Comprehensive’ Defense Deal

Russia and Iran are working toward signing a “comprehensive” treaty to further strengthen the two countries’ relations, the Times of Israel reported on October 31.

Coming soon: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says the agreement is expected to be signed by the end of the year. He did not give any specifics on the defense ties, but he called the treaty a “serious factor in strengthening Russian-Iranian relations” and a “strategic partnership.” Deepening these ties poses definite threats to Israel and Ukraine.

Building ties: Russia has been ramping up efforts to increase cooperation with countries strongly opposed to the United States. These talks come in the wake of mounting U.S. sanctions on Iran and Russia’s deepening military ties with North Korea, a product of a similar “comprehensive” defense treaty the two nations signed in June.

Iran has sent Russia ballistic missiles within the last two months, apparently for use in the Ukraine war.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who considers Russia-Iran relations to be a “priority,” invited the Iranian president for cooperation talks. Iran has been actively seeking improvements for the aviation branch of its military. This closer cooperation could give it access to advanced SU-35 fighter jets.

Clear danger: The treaty talks present a danger to Europe as well as Israel. Iran has also proved to be one of Russia’s principal backers in the war on Ukraine.

The Russia-Iran partnership has been especially threatening to Europe. With Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, concerns over America’s reliability as an ally, and Iran’s actions in the Middle East, watch for Europe to take decisive action soon.
