Russia and North Korea Ratify Mutual Defense Treaty
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Saturday that includes a mutual defense clause.
The ratification of the treaty has been months in the making.
- It was signed in Pyongyang, North Korea, on June 19.
- Putin submitted it to the Russian State Duma for ratification on October 15.
- It was enacted on Saturday, November 9.
Mutual defense: The treaty allows each country to immediately provide military and other assistance to the other nation in case of an armed attack.
The agreement also aims to ensure mutual respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity. The countries will cooperate in the food sector, energy security, information and communication technologies, and health care.
Prophesied cooperation: North Korea was once considered to be an isolated country with little to no foreign cooperation or influence. Time has proved, however, that it does have an ally in Russia.
