China Opens Major South American Port

China opened a major port in Chancay, Peru, on Thursday. This represents a major increase in China’s economic and political power over South America and beyond.

Why it matters: China is a major competitor of the United States and is working to close the curtain on American global dominance. Beijing’s expansion to America’s doorstep is an ominous sign.

[This port] really platforms China in a major new way in South America as the gateway to global markets. It is not just a commercial issue at that point, it is a strategic issue.
—Eric Farnsworth, former U.S. State Department official

Full story: China Ocean Shipping Co., which has overseen the project since it started in 2021, will operate the port, which lies about 50 miles north of Peru’s capital.

  • The port will reduce shipping time from Peru to Asia by 13 days, linking Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile closer to China.
  • It is the first South American Pacific port deep enough to accommodate modern megaships.

Prophesied alliance: The Bible warns that a worldwide alliance is forming that will block the U.S. out of trade. China is prophesied to play a major role in this alliance.
