Poland Starts Building ‘East Shield’ to Fortify Border With Russia and Belarus
Poland has begun construction on a $2.4 billion, 400-mile-long “East Shield” along its border with Russia and Belarus, the Daily Mail reported on November 13.
The project will include antitank fortifications, bunkers, minefields, barbed wire and other obstacles to defend the border. The defensive system will also include antidrone systems and surveillance technologies powered by artificial intelligence to help with early detection of threats.
Deterring Russia: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the project in May, saying it is intended to “deter the enemy” from “aggression against our allies or against our country.” Tusk added that the East Shield will include a satellite component as “another element of safety in space,” making the country ready for “the wars of the future.”
The project is set to be completed in 2028.
Defense spending: Poland’s massive project comes as Europe expects less support in defense from the United States once President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Trump has repeatedly told nato members to live up to their target of spending at least 2 percent of gross domestic product on defense, a prod that was emphasized by nato Secretary General Mark Rutte last week.
Rutte praised Poland for being the leader in these terms, as the country spends more than 4 percent of its gdp on defense.
Rising superpower: Expect European nations like Poland to continue to militarize because of fear of Russia. Bible prophecy shows a militaristic European superpower is about to rise and play a major role in world events.
