North Korea Launches Suicide Drones Into South Korean Airspace

North Korea has launched drones into South Korean airspace several times in recent months, flying them sometimes for hours over vital areas including the capital city and the presidential office’s no-fly zone, Reuters reported on November 15, citing South Korean officials.

The provocations involve self-detonating, suicide drones and have prompted South Korean forces to deploy weapons to destroy the drones. After the most recent launch, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ordered the mass production of kamikaze drones.

Details: According to Kim and state media, these drones are designed “to precisely attack any enemy targets on the ground and in the sea,” can be “used within different striking ranges,” and have an “ever expanding range of use in military activities, low production cost and simple production lines.”

Why it matters: This illustrates the growing tension and weaponization of the world—especially America’s enemies. Drones have proved very useful in Russia’s war on Ukraine and in the wars between Iranian proxies and Israel.
