Los Angeles Votes to Become a ‘Sanctuary City’
The Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to pass a “sanctuary city” ordinance on Tuesday to prevent the city’s migrant population from being deported under President Donald Trump’s illegal-immigrant deportation plan.
- In a vote of 13 to 0, the Council agreed to refuse to share information and resources, including municipal personnel, with federal immigration authorities.
“We’re going to send a very clear message that the city of Los Angeles will not cooperate with ice [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] in any way,” councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez said, admitting that his parents and many of his constituents are “immigrants without legal status” and are “embedded in the larger community.”

Enforcement: Before it can be enforced, the ordinance will need to be voted on a second time and receive approval from Mayor Karen Bass, who has voiced support for the law.
This initial vote follows President Trump’s announcement on Monday that, once in office, he will declare an immigration national emergency and use the military to conduct mass deportations.
Uncooperative: The Los Angeles Police Department already refuses to comply with federal immigration authorities, so the ordinance is unlikely to change much.
The city’s police department has a policy that prohibits officers from asking people about their immigration status and does not allow them to make arrests based on that status.
‘Sanctuary’: During his first term, Trump tried to withhold funding from cities that claimed “sanctuary” for illegal migrants and refused to cooperate with the federal government. In September, he urged Congress to outlaw such cities altogether.
As our April Trumpet issue explains, the flood of illegal immigrants into the United States is a scheme intended to weaken the nation.
Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry has warned that these “sanctuary cities” face a destructive future according to Bible prophecy. Quoting from Amos 7, Mr. Flurry writes in his book America Under Attack:
“[T]he sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste,” verse 9 says. The word sanctuaries is interesting; it refers to false churches that God will allow to be destroyed. But it could also mean something more. Gesenius’ Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon defines the word as “asylum,” which is a place of protection, especially for those pursued by the law; or an institution for the destitute. The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament states, “Metaphorically, the word is used to refer to a place of refuge ….” In the modern nations of Israel [America and the British Commonwealth], it could be describing sanctuary cities. It could portray our sanctuary nation, where our leaders allow anyone and everyone to flow across the border. Many are looking for a better life, but others are violent members of gangs or cartels and smugglers bringing drugs, slaves and thousands of destitute people here. How can this “sanctuary nation” policy not tear this nation apart?
