Germany Pushes for MERCOSUR
At the European Union trade ministers’ meeting in Brussels on November 21, German Economics Minister Robert Habeck urged member states to agree quickly on the free trade agreement with mercosur (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay).
- The agreement would create a free trade zone with 770 million people—the largest trade agreement ever.
In the current geopolitical situation, the EU’s agreement with the mercosur countries is of great strategic importance—both for the EU and for the mercosur countries.
—Robert Habeck
Next steps: While the agreement was signed back in 2019, disagreements over additional declarations halted its implementation. The European Commission plans to conclude the agreement at the mercosur summit on December 5. The Council of Member States and the European Parliament will then be asked to give their approval.
Germany hopes to push the deal through despite concerns of French farmers, Handelsblatt reported on November 22.
Fear of Trump: In light of Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the mercosur agreement would be “the right response to this tendency towards closure, tariffs and trade barriers,” Habeck noted.
A decades-old forecast: The Trumpet and its predecessor, the Plain Truth, have long warned of such an alliance. In 1962, the Plain Truth warned:
The United States is going to be left out in the cold as two gigantic trade blocs, Europe and Latin America, mesh together and begin calling the shots in world commerce.
Europe, however, may require new, stronger leadership before the deal is actually signed.
