Syrians Celebrate in Germany, May Soon Return Home
Thousands of Syrians living in Germany took to the streets on Sunday, celebrating the end of Bashar Assad’s rule over Syria. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised Germany would help establish a peaceful Syria to which they could return.
Today, we stand with all Syrians who are full of hope for a free, just and safe Syria.
A political solution to the conflict in Syria is possible. With international partners and on the basis of the resolutions of the [United Nations] Security Council, Germany will make its contribution.
—Olaf Scholz
Syrians in Germany: Almost 1 million Syrians sought refuge in Germany in 2015 and 2016. Around 700,000 Syrians are still classified as refugees or asylum seekers. They may now return home.
As a first step, I would say we make an offer. What if the German government were to say, Anyone who wants to return to Syria, we will charter planes for them and they will receive a starting capital of €1,000. And secondly, I would like Germany, together with Austria, Turkey and Jordan—these are the four countries that have taken in the most Syrian refugees—to get in touch quickly now and plan a reconstruction and return conference, perhaps for the spring.
—Jens Spahn, deputy parliamentary group leader of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union
Alliance with Germany: An end-time prophecy in Psalm 83 says Syria will ally with Germany. This will require a change in Syria’s current allies, but signs of that change are becoming evident.
