Poland Urges Germany to Lead Europe on Defense
Germany should increase its defense spending to set the example for Europe, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk told Bloomberg on December 10.
Europe today is in a leadership crisis. We should demand more from the center of Europe, especially from Germany.
—Cezary Tomczyk
Europe fears that Donald Trump’s return to the White House means the Continent will be on its own to defend itself against Russia.
Joint borrowing: Tomczyk also called for nations of the European Union to be able to borrow money jointly for military spending, allowing it to be better prepared as the threat from Russia grows. Germany has resisted this as it could lead to excessive borrowing. It would also shift countries’ responsibility for their finances to a European level, placing the biggest burden on the EU’s largest economy: Germany.
German leadership: Europe is increasingly pressuring Germany to step up and lead the militarization of the Continent. However, the country is currently suffering a government crisis after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition collapsed last month. Watch for a German strongman to reverse this crisis and lead Europe to become a militaristic superpower.
