Russia Marches Toward Critical Ukrainian Stronghold
Russia is within 3 miles of Pokrovsk, a logistically critical city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, reported the Kyiv Post on Friday. A compilation map of satellite images shows Russian troops coming in from the south and southeast.
- Multiple rail lines and roads intersect in Pokrovsk, making it a vital logistics hub for Ukrainian forces.
- Because of its close proximity to the administrative border of the Donetsk region, taking Pokrovsk is a high priority for Russia.
- Its capture would be a serious blow to Ukraine and an equally momentous boost for Russia.
Losing Pokrovsk would make it far more difficult for Ukraine to move soldiers, weapons and provisions along its sparsely stretched eastern front line.
Energy under fire: As Russia advances in Ukraine’s east, it has also launched massive air strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in regions throughout western Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denounced these strikes as “terror” tactics.
According to preliminary reports, 93 missiles were launched, including at least one North Korean missile. A total of 81 missiles were shot down, 11 of which were cruise missiles intercepted by our F-16s. Additionally, the Russians used nearly 200 drones in this attack. This was one of the largest strikes targeting our energy infrastructure.
