German Government Designates €21 Billion for Bundeswehr Equipment
The Bundestag’s Budget Committee gave the green light on Wednesday for the procurement of armaments projects worth €21 billion (us$21.8 billion). This includes 38 armaments projects worth over €25 million for the Navy, Army and Air Force.
There is not much Germany’s parliament currently agrees on, but military spending is one of them. The deal was enabled in part with the approval of the opposition, for which Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expressed his thanks.
New submarines: One of the major additions will be the purchase of four 212CD-class submarines for €4.7 billion. Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems developed the new subs for the German and Norwegian navies.
This decision significantly strengthens our defense capability on nato’s northern flank. Greater ranges, improved sensor technology and, for the first time, the possibility of missile deployment from a submarine.
