Illegal Immigrant Charged for Burning Woman Alive on NY Subway
A woman sleeping on a New York subway train was set on fire by an illegal immigrant on Sunday morning. The man then appeared to sit and watch her burn to death.
The suspect: Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old migrant from Guatemala, was arrested in connection with the atrocity later on Sunday. He was charged with first- and second-degree murder and first-degree arson on Monday.
An illegal immigrant, Zapeta-Calil was deported back to Guatemala in 2018. It is not known when or by what path he returned illegally to the United States.
Details: The woman, not yet identified, was declared dead at the scene by the New York Police Department. It appears she was sleeping on a stationary train at Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station in Brooklyn when the man used a lighter to set her clothes on fire.
Surveillance footage shows the perpetrator leaving the subway car and sitting on a platform bench to watch. Footage also shows bystanders did not intervene to rescue the victim, and police officers appeared to walk by as she was burning.
A larger trend: The U.S. is plagued by violent crime, often perpetrated by illegal immigrants. As long as Americans neglect to examine the cause of such atrocities, the effects will worsen.
