U.S. Approves Multibillion Arms Sale to Egypt
The United States government approved a possible $5 billion arms sale to Egypt on Friday, yet to be signed off by Congress.
Significance: Although the U.S. has given Egypt huge amounts of military aid for years, and has been selling the nation vast quantities of military equipment, this is a larger sale than usual.
According to the U.S. Defense Security Agency, the sale would include:
- $4.7 billion toward upgrading 555 Abram tanks—installations include infrared cameras, gunners sights, smoke grenade launchers, engines, transmissions, as well as spare parts and logistical support;
- $630 million toward 2,183 Hellfire missiles;
- $30 million toward advanced precision guided missiles.
Prophetic perspective: Egypt may currently be a key Middle Eastern ally for the U.S., but we expect that to change soon.
Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry has warned: “For years, America has given Egypt billions and billions of dollars’ worth of military aid. The Egyptians are certain to use their formidable military power to swing much of the Middle East toward Iran.”
