Power Outages Plague Ukraine After Russia’s Christmas Attacks
Russia fired over 180 missiles and drones into Ukraine on December 25, the Kyiv Independent reported. The primary focus of the attacks was Ukrainian power and energy infrastructure, leading to vast outages throughout the country during the frigid winter.
- dtek, Ukraine’s largest energy provider, reported that this was the 13th massive attack on the nation’s energy infrastructure this year.
- A power engineer was among those killed in the attacks.
- The attacks wounded at least six people in the city of Kharkiv.
Powerless: Half a million homes have been left without power even as Ukraine experiences near-freezing temperatures. Ukrainians are facing their third winter under the full-scale war.
Deliberate message: This is the second year that Ukraine has observed Christmas according to the Western Gregorian date of December 25 instead of the January 7 date celebrated in Russia. Ukrainian authorities changed the law in July 2023 in an effort to distance the nation from Russia and draw nearer to Europe.
For this reason, Ukrainian President Volodomor Zelenskyy said the date and time of the attacks were not a “spontaneous decision.” He denounced the attacks as “inhumane” targeting of civilians instead of military targets. They signal Russia’s abhorrence of Ukrainian independence.
Undeterred: Russian President Vladimir Putin remains undeterred in his goal to conquer Ukraine. The Bible prophesies that his relentless war machine will grow more powerful in the future.
