Why President Trump Wants Greenland
United States President-elect Donald Trump hasn’t said if he believes in Manifest Destiny, but he is discussing land purchases that would overshadow President James K. Polk’s annexation of Texas.
After teasing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about making Canada the 51st state, Mr. Trump offered to buy Greenland from Denmark. On December 22, Mr. Trump announced his pick for U.S. ambassador to Denmark: PayPal cofounder Ken Howery. Mr. Trump then posted on Truth Social: “For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Denmark does not want to sell Greenland. Even if it did, Mr. Trump would need to convince Greenland’s 55,000 residents to join the U.S. Their 2009 home-rule law states that Greenlanders are their own people. If Mr. Trump annexed the 836,330-square-mile island, it would be America’s biggest territorial purchase ever. Greenland is slightly larger than the 827,987 square miles America acquired in the Louisiana Purchase.
An ‘Absolute Necessity’
There are three main reasons why the “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” to U.S. security. These reasons stand true, whether or not President Trump can acquire Greenland.
1) Greenland has vast rare earth mineral reserves.
Without a few critical minerals, like lithium and zirconium, we can’t produce many defense products, such as jet engines and missiles. In 2020, the U.S. imported 80 percent of its rare earth compounds from China. President Trump wants America to be self-sufficient in rare earth minerals. Buying Greenland, with its 1.6 trillion tons of reserves, would help. It would prevent China from crippling America in a future trade war over those minerals.
2) Greenland is a naval choke point.
The Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom Gap separates the Norwegian and North Seas from the Atlantic Ocean. It has long been a key choke point to keep the Russian Navy out of the Atlantic. Yet Greenland may become an even more important choke point soon.
Since the 1850s, the planet has been thawing from a Little Ice Age. Melting ice caps may soon allow ships to sail along Canada’s and Russia’s north shores. Using Canada’s Northwest Passage to ship goods from Europe to Asia would cut 13 days off the traditional route through Gibraltar and the Suez Canal.
If America owned Greenland, a naval base near Nuuk would give it power over which nations use a key trade route. It could use that power in future conflicts.
3) Greenland is part of North America.
The U.S. is rich and powerful because it controls the Mississippi River Basin, the world’s largest area of connected, arable land. The world’s largest ocean and the Rocky Mountains protect this basin on the west. It is protected on the north by the Arctic tundra and the friendly nation of Canada; on the east by the world’s second-largest ocean and the Appalachian Mountains; on the south by the Chihuahuan Desert. America needs control over these barriers. They are vital to the security of the Great Plains. Controlling Greenland would help keep Canada friendly.
Breached
Dozens of biblical verses promise blessings to Israel for obedience to God’s law and warn of curses for disobedience. Plain Truth editor in chief Herbert W. Armstrong explained in his book The United States and Britain in Prophecy (free upon request) that these verses apply primarily to the end-time descendants of the ancient nation of Israel, which primarily include the U.S. and Britain.
In one prophecy, God likens the U.S. to a hedged vineyard, protected on all sides. It has been hedged by nonthreatening nations and the two largest oceans on Earth. But because of the sins of the people, God warns that He will tear down this hedge.
“I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down” (Isaiah 5:5).
In another prophecy, God says the United States will be besieged by foreign enemies: “The Lord shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand. … And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the Lord thy God hath given thee” (Deuteronomy 28:49, 52).
In 1979, the Trumpet’s parent magazine, the Plain Truth, identified Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution in Cuba as the first breach in America’s protective hedge. The ongoing border crisis with Mexico represents a second breach, and a hostile power in Greenland could represent a third breach in the future. So President Trump has good reason to say that “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
In light of Bible prophecy, you need to watch what is happening in Cuba, Greenland, Mexico and Panama. If America does not revere the God who made it great in the first place, He will remove His protective hedge.
