EU Prepares for Potential Trade War With the U.S.

“What does Donald Trump’s second term mean for German companies?” Der Spiegel asked on January 10. “Some expect a boom; others fear a trade war. One thing is certain: Europe will have to reposition itself.”

Bernd Lange, chairman of the European Union Trade Committee, told the magazine that the EU must be prepared for anything.

Warning to Trump: “I am not giving up hope that the Republicans in Congress will oppose tariffs on European goods,” Lange noted. If the United States does impose tariffs, the EU is “prepared to impose counter-tariffs on American goods and services” that will “be felt in the United States.”

Uniting Europe: Former Volkswagen ceo Herbert Diess believes that the “external threat from the U.S. can shake Europe awake.” The EU needs to come together and accelerate reforms. “This is the only way Europe has a chance,” he noted.

How do we counter Donald Trump? European, united and strong, but not in a gesture of submission.
—Robert Habeck, German economics minister

Economic siege: America’s problems are larger than mere economic trade disputes; it is facing a hostile world. While its economy may appear strong, it cannot face a united European and Asian bloc. Deuteronomy 28 reveals God will bring an economic siege on America if it continues to disobey His laws.

The Holy Roman Empire, along with the kings of the east (the Asian nations), will cause economic problems and bring on destruction in many ways “until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the Lord thy God hath given thee” (verse 52). The real pressure is coming from without. “In all thy gates” refers to a trade war.
