Russia Targets Ukraine’s Power Grid

Russia launched a major attack against Ukraine on Wednesday, targeting energy infrastructure across the country.

  • Russia sent 43 missiles (including ballistic and cruise) and 74 drones before dawn, according to Ukraine’s Air Force.
  • All of the drones either missed their targets or were shot down.
  • Thirty missiles were shot down, but many others hit their targets.
  • The day before, Moscow vowed a response to a Ukrainian attack that allegedly fired Western-supplied missiles into Russia.

The attack shut down Ukraine’s power grid in six regions, amidst freezing weather. Electricity returned to some households by midday, but citizens were urged to avoid using tools that need too much power.

Ukraine has lost over 60 percent of its energy generation capacity, according to a September United Nations refugee agency report.
