Huawei Bribes EU Lawmakers
Authorities in Belgium raided more than 20 addresses, closed two offices, and detained several individuals on Thursday over suspected bribery in the European Parliament for the benefit of Chinese tech giant Huawei.
- Belgian prosecutors said the corruption started in 2021 and involved Huawei lobbyists making payments to European Union lawmakers for political positions, excessive gifts like food and travel expenses, or invitations to football matches.
- In return, the compromised members of European Parliament promoted Huawei’s commercial policies in Europe.
China-EU ties: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for closer trade ties with China multiple times in recent weeks as the United States becomes an increasingly unreliable ally. China’s Foreign Ministry has responded positively, saying it is willing to work with the EU to face “global challenges.”
With news of this corruption scandal, some have criticized von der Leyen for wanting to make trade deals with China.
Trade alliance: The bribery scheme is more evidence that China is greatly involved in EU commerce and politics. And it shows that some EU politicians are willing to back China’s cause as long as they benefit too.
The Bible shows that Europe and China will soon form a trade alliance, what Bible prophecy calls a “mart of nations,” which is prophesied to freeze the U.S. out of world trade.
