‘Turning Point in History’: China, Japan and South Korea Meet
Foreign ministers from China, Japan and South Korea met on Saturday, seeking to unite on economic and security issues.
Why it matters: China is an enemy of South Korea and Japan, which are both American allies. However, United States President Donald Trump’s isolationism may be turning his Asian allies to Beijing. This was the first meeting between these nations’ top diplomats since 2023.
Given the increasingly severe international situation, I believe we may truly be at a turning point in history.
—Takeshi Iwaya, Japan’s foreign minister
China: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the strength the three nations could have if they worked together. Together, they have
- a combined population of nearly 1.6 billion people
- an economic output exceeding $24 trillion
Wang also said China wants to expand the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, a 15-nation free-trade alliance including East, Southeast and Australasian nations.
South Korea: Cho Tae-yul, South Korea’s foreign minister, expressed a desire for
- China to persuade North Korea to forsake its nuclear arsenal
- the Russo-North Korean alliance to end
- North Korea to be punished for its aid in Russia’s war against Ukraine
Japan: Iwaya said he will soon meet individually with Wang and Cho.
This high-level Sino-Japanese economic dialogue will be the first in six years. The meeting will cover a 2023 ban on Japanese seafood imports that China imposed after water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant flowed into the Pacific.
Prophesied alliance: Bible prophecy reveals that Japan and South Korea will soon ally with China. These three nations, along with other Asian countries, will be part of the most powerful military force in history.
