State Department: Anti-Semitism on the Rise Globally
“Today, more than 60 years after the Holocaust, anti-Semitism is not just a fact of history; it is a current event.”
That is a statement from a newly released report, “Contemporary Global Anti-Semitism,” from the United States State Department. The report draws attention to a new and dangerous form of anti-Semitism taking root around the globe: anti-Zionism.
“The distinguishing feature of the new anti-Semitism is criticism of Zionism or Israeli policy that—whether intentionally or unintentionally—has the effect of promoting prejudice against all Jews by demonizing Israel and Israelis and attributing Israel’s perceived faults to its Jewish character,” the report states. “Anti-Semitism couched as criticism of Zionism or Israel often escapes condemnation since it can be more subtle than traditional, more outright forms of anti-Semitism—which themselves often escape condemnation.”
In addition to the surging global anti-Zionist movement, the report also noted that more traditional violence against Jews was a rising problem in nations like Russia, Australia, South Africa, Canada, America, Britain, France and Germany.
