God’s Eternal Covenant With David
While David was king over the ancient nation of Israel, God made with him a perpetual, unconditional covenant. “And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever” (ii Sam. 7:12-13). God assured King David before he died that his son Solomon would build a house for God and that David’s throne would be established forever.
Jeremiah records the same prophecy: “For thus saith the Lord; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel” (Jer. 33:17). Furthermore, “Thus saith the Lord; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers” (vv. 20-21).
Here, God promises that David’s throne would survive as a legitimate seat of rule (and that His own line of true ministers would also endure). God says, unless you can stop Earth from turning on its axis—unless you can remove the sun, moon and stars from heaven—you cannot prevent Him from keeping His covenant to maintain continuously, forever, a descendant of David in one continuous dynasty on that throne! He would not necessarily rule over all the house of Israel, but he would be on that throne ruling a portion of them, enough to form a nation or commonwealth.
Queen Elizabeth ii and the house of Windsor rule on Britain’s throne today only because of God’s covenant with David! Queen Victoria and many of her advisers understood that fact when the British Empire was at its zenith. Now, that more-godly generation has largely died out. Unaware of God’s sure word of prophecy, Britain’s present pro-Europe, anti-royal, socialist government is trying vainly to bury God’s covenant with David. But that covenant cannot be broken!
Whether they realize it or not, the house of Windsor is part of that covenant. And they are accountable to God for their conduct! God will punish: “If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes” (Ps. 89:30-32).
But notice what God will not do: “Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed [dynasty] shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me” (vv. 33-36).
