Taiwan Betrayal
The U.S. President made a well-publicized trip to China in July. It helped President Clinton’s image at home. But what about America’s image before the whole world? And Taiwan?
While America has been trying to isolate Iran, the number-one terrorist nation in the Middle East, China has been helping them (and other U.S. enemies) build their military—including nuclear power. Chinese leaders have been called the “butchers of Tiananmen Square.” They have imprisoned and/or killed their own young people for seeking freedom.
The people of Taiwan broke away from China’s tyrannical rule in 1949. They now have 21 million citizens. America is their most important ally—the source of their military armaments. Without America’s military and psychological support, they would have already been conquered by mainland China. They have little or no chance to survive without our support.
They have a strong democratic rule and they love America. Around 95 percent of their people are against allying with China. On the other hand, China has been one of America’s greatest enemies. And yet, the President let China write his script in what he said about Taiwan on this latest trip!
Here is a quote from the Dallas Morning News (emphasis mine): “What has shaken and disappointed many Taiwanese is a scripted statement Mr. Clinton made Tuesday [June 30] at the urging of Chinese officials. In Shanghai, Mr. Clinton expressed U.S. commitment to what is known in Taiwan and China as the ‘three nos’: no U.S. support for a declaration of independence by Taiwan; no U.S. support for the existence of ‘one China-one Taiwan’; and no U.S. support for Taiwan’s membership in international organizations in which membership is based on statehood….
“Mr. Clinton is the first U.S. President to publicly oppose Taiwanese independence and to verbalize such a restrictive policy toward Taiwan” (July 3).
So there was a heavy price the U.S. had to pay for this greatly publicized visit. The Chinese leaders pressured the President and America to speak against our freedom-loving friends before the whole world. And he is the first President ever to do so publicly!
The people of Taiwan fear for their future. They feel betrayed. Lee Kue-Hsiung, deputy director of the Institute of International Relations in Taipei, said this: “For a long time, U.S. support has been vital to the psychological security of the people of this island. Now, I think a lot of people will feel threatened about the future security of Taiwan.” Many others who were interviewed expressed similar fears. Chen Yu-Chang, a 20-year-old pre-med student at Taiwan University, said, “I think the U.S. may put China ahead of Taiwan, and that worries me. If anything happens, I’m afraid the U.S. might sacrifice Taiwan.” This is a typical view.
But is America listening?
The Chinese leaders would not allow three Radio Free Asia journalists to even come into China and report on the President’s visit because they have reported on human rights abuses in China.
Once again, the President and America surrendered to their demands.
House Speaker Newt Gingrich was “gravely concerned” about this incident. He said to the President, “You should bring them [the three journalists] with you in person as your guests on Air Force One.” Of course, the President didn’t do so. That would have offended “the butchers of Tiananmen Square”!
We not only betray the Tiawanese, we betray our own ideals of freedom. America has been thinking this way so long that few people are concerned.
How about God? Is He concerned? The Bible prophesied that God would “break the pride of our power” in this end time (Lev. 26:19; Dan 9:13-14). Once again, America has showcased its broken will to the whole world. Check your history books and see if this is not unprecedented in the history of any other real superpower. Does the world have any fear of this “superpower”? Are we still a “superpower”? Write for our free booklet The United States and Britain in Prophecy.
God also prophesied about our “lovers” betraying us, unless we repent. God is a God of justice. If we betray others, it is justice that we also be betrayed. Perhaps it is the only way we can learn how horrifying betrayal is.
We can begin to understand this betrayal by fully trying to learn how the people of Taiwan feel about our President’s visit to China. Could we give them a fraction of the attention we recently gave China?
How could anyone fail to see that Taiwan is destined to become a part of mainland China? These 21 million people are going to be forced into the Chinese mold; and it is going to happen for one reason: because of a pitifully weak-willed America.
Does freedom really mean so little to us?
True history is going to judge us very harshly. So is God!
