Bill Barr Rushes to Defense of the Deep State

00:30 Biden vs. Trump Rallies (7 minutes)

Joe Biden spoke in front of a couple hundred unexcited people in a speech last week in a gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Four days later, Donald Trump spoke in that same city in front of an animated crowd of 11,000 people with thousands more waiting outside the stadium. Wilkes-Barre is located in a swing county in Pennsylvania, and the turnout and enthusiasm tell you everything you need to know about which party has momentum heading into the midterm elections.

07:35 Bill Barr on Fox (20 minutes)

Bill Barr came to the defense of Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice during an interview on Fox News last Friday. Barr said that the FBI wouldn’t have conducted the raid on Mar-a-Lago if it didn’t “have pretty good evidence.” Barr also dismissed the unprecedented raid on the former president’s home, emphasizing that the more egregious act was the president potentially taking presidential records to his home. When it comes to having a special master review the documents instead of relying solely on the FBI’s word, Barr said that would just be a “waste of time.” Given the FBI’s track record over the past six years, it’s shocking that Bill Barr isn’t more skeptical of the decision to raid Donald Trump’s home.

27:10 More on Mar-a-Lago (11 minutes)

Despite the DOJ’s aggressive decision to raid the home of President Trump, it appears to be playing defense now. The DOJ clearly appears to be looking for specific documents, but at the same time it doesn’t want to specify which because that could be damaging to the department. And at this stage, it’s not even clear if Donald Trump has what the DOJ is looking for. Lee Smith wrote at Tablet that “what is preserving the stability of the United States at present is therefore something like a Mexican standoff.”

44:25 Forged in Crisis (10 minutes)

“I can’t believe it’s not on the front page of every paper every day,” Kyle Boss said on CNBC last week, referring to the looming energy crisis in Europe. Electricity prices in Europe are tripling and quadrupling in some places, forcing businesses to consider whether or not to remain open. Italy is experiencing blackouts, and some nations are seeing massive protests in response to the rising cost of energy. What will happen in Europe when winter comes?
