Tolerating Totalitarianism: China, Italy, Belarus
Show Notes
- The world is tolerating totalitarianism. In China, Xi Jinping officially secured his third term and appears set to be emperor for life—and one of the most ambitious emperors China has ever had.
- This week marks 100 years since Benito Mussolini overthrew the Italian government and began his fascist dictatorship. The nation’s new prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, heads the nation’s most right-wing government since World War II, and her party has direct ties to Mussolini.
- The former Soviet state of Belarus is dominated by the ex-Communist Alexander Lukashenko. We get a look at what is happening in this country by speaking with a human rights group there that just received the Nobel Peace Prize.
- And for the Last Word, we look at the origins of a bizarre holiday that will be broadly celebrated in a few days: Halloween.
