German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on November 12 that calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East equate to calls “that Israel should allow Hamas to recover and obtain new missiles.” His continued support of Israel has received much criticism.

“Scholz’s stance clashes with that [of] many Arab countries, France’s Emmanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who was due to meet the German leader in Berlin next week,” wrote the Times of Israel.

This is a courageous step for Germany, especially since the United States is failing at the same balancing act. cnn wrote on November 10:

The Biden administration has received stark warnings from American diplomats in the Arab world that its strong support for Israel’s destructive and deadly military campaign in Gaza “is losing us Arab publics for a generation,” according to a diplomatic cable obtained by cnn.

As Trumpet executive editor Stephen Flurry proved in “Joebama Delayed Israel’s Ground Invasion,” the Biden administration has betrayed Israel on many levels. Still, the mainstream media and hostile diplomats accuse Joe Biden of supporting a “destructive and deadly military campaign in Gaza” and not doing enough for Palestinians. Given this pressure, we can expect U.S. support for Israel to weaken further.

Germany is actually supporting Israel more than the U.S. is; it has even banned pro-Hamas protests. The New York Times wrote:

Since Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israel and Israel’s subsequent bombardment of Gaza, governments across Europe have grappled with how the conflict has played out in their own countries. Some, citing security fears, have imposed stiff restrictions on pro-Palestinian protests in particular or banned them altogether, raising concerns about the violation of civil liberties. …

Nowhere has the debate over what is legal and legitimate expression of dissent been more fraught than in Germany, where it has struck at the heart of how the nation defines itself, and prompted questions about which values should be prioritized at the cost of others.

Germany sees severely restricting criticism of Israel as a necessary part of atoning for the Holocaust.

Germany even prohibited a demonstration by the progressive Jewish group Jüdische Stimme. The New York Times demanded an explanation from the German police, which responded that the demonstration was “explicitly open to participants of Palestinian origin.” They also said the organizers coordinated with other protesters whose demonstrations had previously been banned due to concerns about anti-Semitic incitement.

How the world has changed! The same Germany that committed the greatest bloodshed on Jewish life now needs to justify its support for the Jewish state.
