Russia’s Cyberattacks Threaten NATO
Russia is launching relentless cyberattacks against nato nations that could leave millions without power and disrupt many other systems, Pat McFadden, a British senior member of Parliament, warned on Monday.
Details: Russo-nato tensions are reaching new heights because of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
McFadden, who works in national security, spoke at a cybersecurity conference in London, saying: “No one should underestimate the Russian cyberthreat to nato.” He described Moscow as “exceptionally aggressive and reckless in the cyber realm.”
- Cybercriminals and hacktivists from within and without Russia’s military have increased both their number and range of attacks in the past year.
- Russian hacktivists are causing “increasingly frequent, and in some cases, increasingly sophisticated” attacks across the globe.
- “Russian state-aligned groups” took responsibility for “at least nine separate cyberattacks of varying severity against nato states.”
Russia recently hit South Korea with cyberattacks, a response to South Korea monitoring North Korean troops moving to Russia.
These groups are unpredictable, they act with disregard for the potential geopolitical consequences, and with just one miscalculation could wreak havoc on our networks.
