Scholz: Germany Must Back a Democratic Syria for Refugee Return
A proposed plan from the political opposition to return thousands of refugees to Syria is adding pressure on the German government. On Tuesday evening, Chancellor Olaf Scholz claimed on ard that it was premature for Syrian refugees to return home due to a “very, very dangerous situation.”
It must now be our task to ensure, with the opportunities we have and together with many other countries, that the chance does not pass … for democracy to emerge, for people of different religions to be able to live well together. That will be the task of the next few days, and then we will see what the consequences are. Perhaps if things go well, many will say of themselves that they now want to participate in the reconstruction of their country.
