Germany Initiates Diplomatic Talks With Syria
Germany is scheduled to hold its first diplomatic discussions with Syria’s new leadership in Damascus today. The visit lines up with their recently created eight-point plan for Syria.
French officials will be present at the meeting as well.
The United States and United Kingdom have also been quick to engage in diplomatic talks with Syria after President Bashar Assad was ousted from power earlier this month.
Germany’s focus: Key statements from the German Foreign Ministry:
- “The focus will be on an inclusive transition process in Syria and the protection of minorities.”
- “The possibilities of a diplomatic presence in Damascus are also being explored.”
- “Syria must not become a plaything of foreign powers, nor a testing ground for radical forces.”
Germany has already promised €8 million (us$8.4 million) in emergency aid and €125 million for development projects in Syria.
Watch: Germany has been eyeing Syria for some time. Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote earlier this month: “We can expect Germany and Syria to form an alliance shortly.”
